Technology is powerful. It has changed the face of business forever. We can connect with anyone, anywhere across the globe. We can share videos, photos and sound clips; we can create documents in an instant; we can keep track of information like never before and we can even purchase products directly from our computers with greater product knowledge that ever before. All these benefits come with a trade off in energy consumption, carbon emissions, and toxic chemicals in our landfills. Technology isn’t going anywhere either, it is growing expotentially and is being refreshed almost as quickly as it grows. All this adds up to a major environmental concern that governments, advocacy groups, and responsible organizations such as NewGen are working to address.
At NewGen we are in a unique position to make a big impact on the environment because we manage so much technology. The technology we alone manage consumes millions of KWh of energy, creates thousands of tons of carbon emissions, and contains considerable amounts of toxic chemicals such as mercury and lead.
Through investments in the education of our people and our clients, we are adapting our processes to be more green, and making impactful changes such as shutting down PCs the 16 or so hours a day they’re not in use. These changes are making significant improvements to the way all this technology affects the environment.
Our green influence extends beyond ownership and management of technology. We are making conscious efforts to recommend environmentally friendly products and solutions, with low power consumption and heat emission. We are making it policy to only work with environmentally responsible manufacturers. And we are providing end-of-life services where we help our clients dispose of old technology through a combination of reuse (by local charities such as the Electronics Recycling Association) and environmentally friendly recycling.
We recently launched a new ultra-green PC solution which can reduce PC power consumption by 2-4 times, and a desktop virtualization solution that can reduce power consumption by 5-12 times. We are also working with BC Hydro to drastically reduce datacenter power consumption through their PowerSmart for Business initiative.
